West Ham United target Cedric Bakambu has signed a contract extension with Villarreal that will keep him at the club until 2022.

The new deal sees the 26-year-old commit his long term future to the La Liga club and ends speculation that the striker was set for a move to the Premier League with either West Ham or Newcastle.

Bakambu signed for The Yellow Submarine from Turkish side Bursaspor in the summer of 2015 and has since found the net 33 times in all competitions in his two seasons with the club. 11 of those came last year as he helped Fran Escriba’s to a fifth placed finish and a spot in the Europa League.

West Ham were reported to have had a club record bid of £22 million rejected for the DR Congo international only earlier this month as Slaven Bilic searches for a new striker amidst injury problems with both Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho.

The Hammers must now look elsewhere for a new hitman with Bakambu having now ended any chance of a move to the London Stadium by penning a new deal with his current club.
