West Ham are behind Newcastle United in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Ruben Semedo, according to Sky Sports.
West Bromwich Albion are also interested in the Portuguese Under 21 international but the Magpies are the only ones so far who have submitted a formal offer.
Rafa Benitez’s side are believed to have made a bid of £10m, but Sporting are holding out for £3m more. Semedo is due to play at the European Under 21 Championships which starts in two weeks and the player is said to be keen to make the move to the Premier League before the start of the tournament.
The 23 year old centre back, who can also play as a holding midfielder, was a regular under manager Jorge Jesus last season, making 31 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese club as Sporting finished third in the league, twelve points behind city rivals Benfica at the top of the table.
