Angelo Ogbonna has signed a new five-year contract with West Ham.

The Italian defender missed the latter half of last season following requiring surgery on his knee in January, however returned for the final game of the season as West Ham beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor.

Rumours were afloat that the defender was set to return to Serie A this summer, with Sampdoria interested in the 29-year-old, but the penning of a new five year contract has eliminated that possibility.

Speaking on whufc.com, Ogbonna said:  “I’m really grateful for this new deal, our position last year was quite high and we are looking forward to improving next season.

“My target is that I can’t wait to get back playing. I think we have a long season ahead and for me my target is to be better than last season. We finished in 11th position but very close to eighth position and we know we can do better than what we did last year.”

Ogbonna joined the Hammers from Juventus in 2015, and his new contract will keep him with the club until 2022. He has been capped 13 times for Italy.
