West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to express their gratitude to former midfielder Scott Parker after the Englishman announced his retirement from football.

Parker, who was named Hammer of the Year three times in his five year spell with he club between 2007-2012, made nearly 600 career appearances in a 20-year-long career that saw him play for West Ham, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Newcastle United Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, as well as make 18 senior appearances for England.

“I have enjoyed so many incredible moments during my career,” Parker wrote in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon. “From making my first team debut at Charlton, to playing regularly in the Premier League, playing in the Champions League to then playing in a major tournament for England, as well as ultimately fulfilling a lifelong dream by captaining my country. There are just too many highlights to mention.

“I would like to thank everyone at Charlton Athletic, Norwich City, Chelsea, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham for the unbelievable support that I’ve been shown throughout my time at each and every one of the club’s I’ve been proud to represent.”

Parker, 36, is fondly remembered by Hammers fans for his no-nonsense play and never say die attitude in the middle of the park, and many of them took to the Twittersphere to thank the Englishman for his years in Claret and Blue.
