West Ham fans have been gifted terrific news this afternoon after it was revealed that defender Angelo Ogbonna had signed a new contract with the club, keeping him at the London Stadium until 2022.

The Italy international was missed by the Hammers in the latter half of last season having spent it on the sidelines following surgery on his knee, but managed to return for the last game of the season – a 2-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Speaking on the club’s official website, Ogbonna said he was pleased to be staying with the club.

“I’m really grateful for this new deal,” said the Italian. “Our position last year was quite high and we are looking forward to improving next season.

“My target is that I can’t wait to get back playing. I think we have a long season ahead and for me my target is to be better than last season. We finished in 11th position but very close to 8th position and we know we can do better than what we did last year.”

West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the Italian’s new deal, with the news bringing a smile to more than the majority of Hammers fans …
