David Moyes has spoken out about his disappointment that Jermain Defoe can leave Sunderland on a free with relegation to the Championship confirmed.

According to a report in The Standard Crystal Palace and West Ham are very much in among the contenders to sign the born-again England striker.

West Ham had a £6m bid for Defoe turned down in January and are still interested in their former player even though his form has dipped as Sunderland’s relegation became inevitable.

In January there was still a huge question mark over West Ham’s Premier League survival, with that place secured Slaven Bilic is exploring a number of striking options.

With a tried and tested Premier League striker available on a free West Ham are keen to discuss a deal with the 34-year-old but it doesn’t have the same urgency as it did in January.

Asked about the Defoe situation Moyes said that it was hard to take and something that he wouldn’t sanction as a manager.
