Fiorentina are preparing to step up their chase for West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang, according to the Il Corriere Fiorentino (via Calciomercato.com).

The Florence based publication believe the Viola’s Sporting Director Pantaleo Corvino is keen on strengthening the team’s midfield and has eyed a move for the Hammers star as part of his summer recruitment drive.

Fiorentina are currently looking for a new manager with Paulo Sousa poised to resign despite guiding the Italian side to an eighth place finish in Serie A. Sporting directors on the continent however usually take the lead in signings, and the club’s interest in Obiang goes back a number of months.

The Spaniard missed the last two months of the season with an ankle injury, and back in April he returned to Italy to watch former club Sampdoria in a league match. He told the Italian media at the time that he had contact with Fiorentina in January, prompting the latest links.
