Bournemouth will rival West Ham to the signing of Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, according to Sky Sports News HQ.

The TV station report that sources close to the player admit he is aware of interest from both former clubs. The veteran forward started out his career with the Hammers before an acrimonious departure in 2004 after requesting a transfer following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Defoe however also played for the Cherries during a loan spell in 2000/01 and it seems Eddie Howe is keen to snap up the 34 year old who has scored 14 league goals for relegated Sunderland this season.

It has been reported by the Daily Mail that he will now be available on a free transfer following the Black Cats’ relegation to the Championship despite having a contract that expires in 2019.

West Ham tried to sign the striker in the January transfer window but their interest was rebuffed despite making two bids for the England international.
