Fleetwood Town have announced that goalkeeper Alex Cairns has signed a new long term deal to remain at the League One outfit.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that the 24 year old was a target for Slaven Bilic’s side. Both first team goalkeepers Darren Randolph and Adrian have struggled for form this campaign and it seems Cairns was targeted as a potential signing to increase competition for the number one spot.

Cairns has had a very good season for Fleetwood but West Ham’s interest still seems surprising considering he did not start the season as Fleetwood’s first choice goalkeeper.

Manager Uwe Rosler opted for Chris Neal for the club’s opening league fixtures and it was only in November that Cairns became firmly established as the club’s number one keeper. He has played every league game since the 2-1 home win against Chesterfield, making 35 appearances in all competitions, conceding 28 and keeping an impressive 17 clean sheets.
