Sky Sports have quoted a senior source at West Ham that seems to suggest the club are interested in signing Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in the summer.

The 31 year old’s future at Old Trafford looks to be in doubt after making just nine Premier League starts this season. When asked by Sky Sports about Rooney, the source said:

“Never say never.”

That quote looks like pretty thin evidence to say the least. Rooney has said in the past that he would only play for two Premier League clubs in United and Everton.

There has been speculation that the England international could move abroad to play either in MLS or in the Chinese Super League but so far there has been no concrete news on a transfer away from England.

West Ham are believed to be looking for a new striker in the summer after pulling the plug on moves for Brentford’s Scott Hogan and Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window, but whether Rooney is a genuine target, we will have to wait and see.
