West Ham remain interested in signing Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, according to the Sun.

A West Ham insider told the Sun that they believe that the 34 year old will be available for free if the Black Cats are relegated from the Premier League this season:

“We believe it’s a free if they go down. Although his wages are high it would be a good deal for us. We think he would love to finish his days at the club that groomed him. We will have a good look at him on April 15 when we are up there.”

West Ham face Defoe’s Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the middle of next month, and it seems, if the source is reliable, they will be keeping an eye on the former Hammers striker in view to making an offer in the summer.

Defoe was a target for the Hammers in January but after a £6million bid was turned down by Sunderland, they moved on to other targets. His 14 Premier League goals playing for a relegation threatened side has earned him an England recall. The forward was named in the squad by Gareth Southgate for this week’s matches against Germany and Lithuania, despite entering the veteran stages of his career.
