West Ham striker Andy Carroll is set for a shock return to the England set up thanks to his recent haul in front of goal.

Three Lions chief Gareth Southgate is keen to call up the Hammers’ target man for next months games against Germany and Lithuania, according to reports in The Sun.

Reports suggest that Carroll will be playing for an England place when West Ham take on West Brom at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Southgate himself will be in attendance to catch his own glimpse of the in-form hitman against the Baggies, adds the the Mail.

Carroll has experienced something of a purple patch in recent weeks after snatching five goals in his last seven games. The big man scored a rare right-footed strike past Southampton stopper Fraser Forster on Saturday, which took his tally for the season up to six.

He already has nine caps for the national team but hasn’t worn a Three Lions shirt since 2012. His two international goals came against Ghana and Sweden, the latter being a powerful header into the bottom corner which sums up the towering striker’s world-class aerial ability.

Last week, Carroll said that he would have made more appearances for England if he had not been plagued by injuries. He said:

Nine caps for England, there are more caps in me. I’ve always thought that I could play for England if I am on my game — if I am fit

Any excuse to check out that goal against Sweden again…
