West Ham defender Havard Nordtveit has not had the easiest of times since arriving from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer. Playing in an unfamiliar right back role, the Norwegian has made a number of errors that have proved costly in recent months.

Giving away a late penalty against London rivals Tottenham that led to a 3-2 defeat after being 2-1 up did little to help him settle at the club. Talking to Norway’s TV2, he reflected on his start to life with the Hammers.

“It has been difficult, I have to be honest and say so. Of course there are some games you just want to forget.”

Nordtveit was an established first team regular in Germany, playing in a holding midfield role for Gladbach, but his lack of pace has caused him numerous problems in the Premier League where the tempo is a lot higher than in the Bundesliga. Nordtveit says he is hoping that it is simply an adaptation period and that he will have a better second season:

“You must have a perspective on life. It’s a question of football. You have family to take care of, you have a son. The first season I must take as a learning period, and then I’ll blossom in full my second year.”

Nordtveit also revealed he is struggling to be fit for the weekend’s match against Crystal Palace after picking up a knee injury in the 5-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup last week.
