Despite starting against Manchester United yesterday (and then controversially being sent off), winger Sofiane Feghouli missed out on the Algeria squad to play in Gabon this month at the African Cup of Nations due to a lack of game time with West Ham.

Feghouli was an integral player in Algeria’s qualification for the tournament and when asked about the player’s exclusion by the press in the lead up to their first match against Zimbabwe later this month, head coach Georges Leekens vowed to go to London and meet with Hammers boss Slaven Bilic about his player’s lack of matches. He is quoted by Afrik-Foot as saying:

“Just after the African Cup if Nations, I will go to England to solve the problem of Feghouli. It’s an important player who makes a difference. If Feghouli does not play, I’ll see his coach at West Ham. I know how to find a solution.”

The match against Manchester United was Feghouli’s first league start of the season, but his first half challenge on Phil Jones that led to his red card meant the Hammers had an uphill struggle to get any result from the match. West Ham have appealed the decision with many fans and pundits seeing referee Mike Dean’s decision as extremely harsh.
