The last few months will have taught Slaven Bilic arguably more about his squad than the whole of last season put together.
Last year, things were pretty plain sailing. The club were not scared of anyone and duly attacked at will whilst their defence was as solid as anything and that is what led them to seventh place in the league table.
This season, though, the Hammers are only now just getting going after a torrid start. Players have had to dig their heels in and roll their sleeves up to get themselves out of a rut and Bilic will now know who has the stomach for a fight and who needs to be left behind.
The second half of the season is going to be tough as the London side try to get into the top half at least and the Croatian needs players he can rely on.
