West Ham striker Diafra Sakho will be sidelined for six weeks with a thigh injury, according to the club’s official website. The Senegalese international started his first match of the season against Manchester United on Sunday and promptly scored in the second minute to give the Hammers a 1-0 lead.

The 26 year old became the first striker to score for West Ham this season after a barren run for the forwards which lasted 18 matches. The forward had been out since the start of the season because of a chronic back problem.

The injury prevented his £16million move to West Bromwich Albion from going ahead in the summer, but with the lack of goals up front, manager Slaven Bilic would have been pleased to see the striker regain fitness and get back in the goals. West Ham face Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in their next three matches and will surely miss Sakho’s presence in the team.

Unfortunately after long injury layoffs, further injuries can occur and his six week layoff will no doubt make it even more likely that the Hammers will make a move in the January transfer window for another striker.
