Watford striker Troy Deeney has stated that he felt that West Ham’s showboating helped to galvanise his men in the weekend’s 4-2 win at the London Stadium.

The Hammers were two goals to the good and cruising, with Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini showcasing their immense individual skills as the Hornets were on the back foot.

However, the visitors fought back admirably and refused to be beaten, with four unanswered goals ensuring that the Vicarage Road outfit recorded three points.

West Ham’s calamitous defending helped their opponents’ cause, but it may well have been the trickery and showboating of Lanzini and Payet that proved the biggest motivation for the visitors.

Deeney, who got his name on the scoresheet in his side’s win, admitted that he and his men were spurred on after being embarrassed by the skills of the West Ham attacking duo.

“As a player, I thought they were trying to mug us off a little bit,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.

“You can appreciate good skill and that was great skill for the second goal, but as a professional, you cannot allow someone to do that to you.

“You see that in the playground with six and seven-year-olds and we are grown men.

“There were some harsh words said to each other and everyone had that fire in their belly again.

“We all dug in and started to lay a bit of a hand on them and before you know it we were getting more chances and we got two goals before half-time.

“I thought we were the only team who were going to win it in the second half.”

Slaven Bilic’s men will need to regroup and go again, with the season’s objectives already threatening to become unachievable.
