Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson has praised West Ham’s move to sign Alvaro Arbeloa and has stated that he feels the Spanish veteran will be an astute addition for Slaven Bilic’s men.
The Hammers had a progressive campaign in 2015-16 and have looked to back this up with an extensive summer recruitment drive.
Although things have not quite gone to plan on the pitch as yet this term, there is no doubting the calibre of player in the London Stadium squad currently.
Arbeloa has plenty of international and Champions League experience, with the veteran leaving Real Madrid in search of more regular football with the Premier League side.
Thompson knows the defender well from his time at Liverpool and has stated that the new man will prove to be a valuable asset for the London club.
“He wasn’t getting games, certainly in the last 12 months,” the former Liverpool man told Sky Sports.
“He was very much out of the side and not getting a kick. He’s a very good defender – you don’t get a lot going forward to get that final ball, he didn’t at Liverpool, but he did a fantastic job for Liverpool being and out-and-out right back.”
West Ham have craved a dedicated right-back in recent times and Arbeloa could well be the man to fill this troublesome position in 2016-17.
