When Enner Valencia arrived from Pachuca in 2014 there was real hope that West Ham had uncovered a diamond in the rough. Nicknamed ‘superman’, the Ecuadorian international had impressed in the World Cup. He was quick, versatile, and crucially looked like he knew how to find the back of the net.

Two years later, though, it is clear that Valencia has not lived up to expectations. Many West Ham fans will agree that it is time for him to move on, as we bolster the squad with other attacking options.

Valencia was given ample opportunity in his first season under Allardyce. Playing 32 games in the 2014/15 season, he mustered just 4 goals.

Valencia seemed to have made progress in the beginning of the 2015/16 season. He started brightly, scoring multiple goals in his first few matches and was looking a real threat.

However, his season was then hampered by an ankle injury. When Valencia eventually returned, he looked to lack cutting edge and confidence. In fact, he never really recovered. In the end, he managed just 4 goals again for the season.

Valencia’s ultimate problem has been a lack of end product. He is fast, versatile and can dribble through defences, but is just unable to find the net afterwards. His finishing has frankly been abysmal. Many a time have West ham squandered matches because Valencia has been unable to finish simple chances, such as in the FA Cup replay against Manchester United.

Valencia’s most recent performances simply confirm this view. He played the full 90 minutes in the Europa League qualifier against Domzale. Despite working hard, many were frustrated by his inability to grab a goal against relatively low-quality opposition.

West Ham have already made a number of signings which effectively make Valencia surplus. The arrival of Ayew is damning for Valencia, as he would likely fill the position of supporting striker. Feghouli will be the go to wide man, making Valencia’s ability to play on the wings obsolete.

With West Ham still looking to bring on another top striker, and Andy Carroll already ahead in the pecking order, it seems Valencia’s days are numbered.

This is probably for the best. West Ham are looking to really push on this season and challenge for Europe. We need a higher calibre of player to do this.

Valencia’s transfer would help fund our growing ambitions. The asking fee is thought to be around £15m, a decent sum. West Brom, Galatasaray and Lazio have already shown interest. Bilic and the owners should be receptive to the offers that come their way.
