Could this man be West Ham’s surprise coup this summer?

I have just read the daily article written by West Ham’s leading ITK ExWhuEmployee. The article mentions the developments in the record breaking move for Colombian striker Carlos Bacca (someone who I did not personally have as my top choice).

But for me the biggest and most interesting thing to see was the suggestion of a quick fire move for a player of a high calibre.

Yes, I would hope that this player is the man that I spent my previous article praising (Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez) but as the Bacca move ebbs closer I have a different player in mind.

This player is again someone with links to Manchester United and is in fact the Spanish maestro Juan Mata.

For me, despite the fact the former Chelsea and Valencia man is fielded in a position where we do not lack depth is no concern. As much as I rate our infamous Frenchman Dimitri Payet, I believe that Juan Mata would be the best player I would be able to realistically see in the claret and blue of West Ham.

The 37million pound man has the potential to be this signing that Ex speaks of for various reasons. The biggest of these would be that new boss Jose Mourinho is for some reason not a fan of the European Champion, Champions League winner and FIFA World Cup winner.

This is evident through the fact he sold the Spaniard once before and is apparently willing to let Mata leave this summer. A further reason why the signing could and would be possible is that through signing a player of Mata’s ability the two David’s would have, for me, fulfilled their promise of a marquee signing, as without slating the deal for Bacca of which I think is a smart move by the board Mata is a better calibre of player.

However this may not be an open and close case as he is likely to be on a higher wage than anyone at the club (our highest earner being current record signing Andy Carroll on £90,000 before clauses) and so would be a costly investment when looking at wage structure and transfer fee. And also due to the Spaniard’s clear ability he would have no shortage of suitors and may find a return to Spain more to his liking or, in a rather odd career move, decide to join Ronald Koeman at Everton.

A further reason why this is an unlikely move however would be the aforementioned depth in the attacking midfield positions, although I believe he would be the best option he would have competition from Payet, Lanzini, Feghouli and even youngsters such as Martin Samuelson and Domingos Quina.

But overall I hope that the surprise signing spoken about in ExWHUemployee’s column is none other than Juan Mata, a man who has won every major European trophy ( Champions League, Europa League and European Championship ) as well as worked at clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United as for me this would be a clear showing of the owners completing a marquee signing to begin our tenure at the Olympic Stadium.
