West Ham United are in the running to sign Aston Villa forward Jordan Ayew but face competition from French club Nice, according to Foot Mercato.

The Hammers are in the market for attacking reinforcements but have found their search for a new centre forward difficult this summer.

Ayew was a rare bright spark for Villa last season in a campaign that the Midlands club will hope to forget, but the former Marseille attacker acquitted himself well in the Premier League.

With his current employers relegated last term, the 24-year-old is widely expected to leave Villa Park and could well move back to a Premier League club.

The report suggests that Nice want Ayew as a replacement for Hatem Ben Arfa, but that West Ham hold the power in efforts to sign the Villa attacker.

While an able deputy should Enner Valencia or Diafra Sakho leave the club this summer, the Ghana international is not the big name that West Ham supporters are hoping for.
