West Ham United chief David Sullivan has admitted that the London club would have loved to have signed Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy but have been priced out of a move for the England international by Arsenal.

The Gunners are believed to have activated the Foxes star’s release clause, which is said to be between £20-22 million, and the hotshot forward looks set for a move to the Emirates Stadium as a result.

West Ham were being linked with a move for Vardy in their striker search, but have since turned their attention to other targets.

Sullivan has stressed that the Hammers could have made a move for the Leicester star but it would not have made financial sense.

“It was reported that one of those targets was Jamie Vardy, and while it is true that we would loved to have had him, the numbers being talked about in a potential move to Arsenal show that the market is going potty,” he told the club’s official website.

“It is safe to say that signing him would have smashed our current wage structure and we are determined to buy players with good value in this mad market.”

Despite not being able to land Vardy, Sullivan has confirmed that the club are working hard to add new faces to Slaven Bilic’s squad and have made a host of offers for new players.

“We’re working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make this happen, and with five bids in for players at the moment, we are hopeful that we can bring you some exciting news soon,” he said.
