West Ham are reportedly considering a loan move for Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri.

Calleri is currently on loan at Sao Paolo from Boca Juniors, where he has 12 goals in 24 appearances this season.

According to the Evening Standard, Calleri is being considered as an option for the Europa League to boost the squad for the upcoming season. This means we would likely see Calleri mostly in Europe at first, and if it goes well he could earn his place in Slaven Bilic’s first team squad for Premier League games.

West Ham were knocked back in their pursuit of Alexandre Lacazette last week, after their bid was rejected for the striker. While they are still pursuing various options for a striker next season, Calleri could be a great addition as a back up. Tottenham are reportedly also after the youngster, who could potentially be a replacement for Enner Valencia if he were to leave or Emmanuel Emenike whose loan deal is not expected to be extended.

With only Diafra Sakho and Andy Carroll in the first team squad as recognised forwards, it wouldn’t be surprising to see two or even three strikers come in this summer. Calleri would need time to adjust after joining from the Brazilian league, and the Europa League could be the perfect competition for him to show us what he can do.

Calleri is a youngster with a great goal scoring record, who can score various different types of goals. A loan deal wouldn’t break the bank in terms of wages either, so it could be a no brainer for Bilic this summer. If it doesn’t work out, Calleri can go back to Boca Juniors but the club have nothing to lose with this deal.
