Why Payet should start for France

Dimitri Payet was the commander-in-chief for most of West Ham’s memorable season and has really made himself at home in the team’s midfield.

His technique, vision and set-piece skills consistently threatened the opposition and the 29 year old always made something happen when he had the ball at his feet in the attacking third.

Payet was so influential that he was awarded a place in the PFA Team of the Year, an absolutely incredible feat given it was only his first season in the league.

The way he quickly slotted into the squad has played a key part in his success – as Hammer’s manager Slaven Bilic said: “He has adapted to the club and the team as if it had always been there.”

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that he was able to slot in so seamlessly, particularly after he did the same for the French national team in March against Holland and Russia. Having been absent from the French squad since 7 June 2015 when he scored against Belgium, he could have been forgiven for looking a little lost back under the international spotlight. However, it wasn’t to be as he really put his hand up for selection for the summer after two sublime performances in blue.

His competition with Anthony Martial on the left side of the French attack is the main debate. Even though the youngster has had a great first season with the Red Devils by scoring 17 goals, his efficiency in front of goal has been fairly poor scoring none in eight matches. In contrast, Payet has scored 2 goals in the last 3.

It is hard to tell who Didier Deschamps will choose for the summer, however, it may be the case that he alternates with both Payet and Martial for the national team, with them both bringing different qualities off the bench.
