West Ham United defender Winston Reid has hailed the club’s fans for providing an electric atmosphere as the London outfit bid farewell to the Boleyn Ground against Manchester United on Tuesday night.

The Hammers will move away from their historic home this summer and move to the Olympic Stadium in a bid to go toe-to-toe with the biggest clubs in the English game.

The game was full of excitement as Diafra Sakho gave Slaven Bilic’s men the lead, only for an Anthony Martial double to threaten a crushing defeat on the landmark occasion.

However, West Ham showed real resolve to fight their way back into the game, with goals from Michail Antonio and Winston Reid enough to secure a 3-2 win over the Red Devils.

Reid has been an unsung hero in the Hammers’ push for a place in the top six this season and a fitting player to score the last goal at Upton Park.

The New Zealand international said that the game was an amazing experience – because of the atmosphere the fans created.

“It was just meant to be tonight,” The Mirror quote Reid as saying.

“It is brilliant for us. It was the best atmosphere we have played in. The fans have been with us through the good times and the bad times.”
