Monday Night Football presenter Ed Chamberlin claimed that Dimitri Payet was sending a message out to France manager Didier Deschamps after his man of the match performance against Newcastle United last night.

The midfielder produced his most impressive Hammers display to date, scoring twice and working tirelessly to get back and help the team defend. Everything Payet did suggests that he is a fantastic talent but right now he is struggling to get the attention of Deschamps ahead of a big year on the international front.

In an interview with Canal Football Club, the 28-year-old comments on his involvement with the international squad and his first impressions of West Ham:

“I am surprised. Surprised about the quality of the squad. It is a club with ambitions, set out notably by the new manager, with whom I spoke with a lot. It is true that it (the transfer) happened quickly. It is true that the initial idea was not to cross the Channel but to continue my adventure with Marseille.”

Although the forward has admitted that he did not originally intend to move to the Hammers, he has settled in very well. Despite being picked for the national team, Deschamps seems to want more from the player. When asked whether it may be more difficult for some players to impress France’s manager more than others, Payet responded:

“Yes, yes for sure. Honestly, I am struggling to understand what he (Deschamps) is really asking of me. For me, it has been maybe a year now that I have been giving my all and I am probably in the best form of my career. I don’t know what more he wants, of course I can always do better but in the overall idea, I struggle to understand it.”

Looking at the way Payet has played so far this season, France must have one hell of a squad if the playmaker cannot get the opportunity to cement his position in the national team.

One thing is for sure, Slaven Bilic will not overlook Payet at any point this season. The Croatian had nothing but praise for his star signing:
