It’s probably not the best time to be Sam Allardyce. An extremely tough run of fixtures has left the Hammers with just one win in twelve matches, and the man can hardly pick up a newspaper without reading speculation about his future at the club. The West Ham chairman have made it clear that a decision about Allardyce will be made at the close of the season – which is absolutely the right thing to do, as the 27 points we still have to fight for could make a massive difference to how successful Allardyce has been at club.
The heat on Sam’s future has intensified this week with rumours that Sunderland are interested in bringing Allardyce back up North after the sacking of Sunderland manager Gus Poyet. Whilst Sunderland have now appointed Dick Advocaat untill the end of the season, the jury is still out over what will happen regarding Allardyce’s career over the summer. After all, it’s not just about whether West Ham want him to stay – it’s also potentially Allardyce’s decision whether he wishes to stay with us or head to pastures anew (he has been committed to taking the team to the Olympic Stadium, but equally, he’d be an excellent choice for Sunderland.)
There have been plenty of names prematurely thrown into the ring to replace Big Sam, should he depart, and here’s a look at who we’ve been linked with and who fans are interested in seeing replace Allardyce – and also just how likely it is that these candidates could take the helm next season.
