Moving Stewart DowningI liked Downing last year, but was convinced he wasn’t living up to his potential. He and Matt Jarvis were more or less interchangeable, and I confess to thinking his position was one that could do with strengthening – all thoughts that went straight out of the window once Sam rearranged the midfield and put Downing into his new position and role. Downing’s been brilliant this season, and with two goals and four assists in the Premier League, he’s been one of our most important players.
His resurgence in form has been a teeny bit of a double-edged sword, as whilst I’m thrilled for him to have been called up for England, I’d rather have an un-capped yet un-injured Downing available. However, I’m grateful he’s having such a strong season.
