After a very good opening quarter to the season, West Ham sit in 5th spot in the Premier League, joint on points with Arsenal, who currently occupy the final Champions League slot in 4th. It would be a big ask for the Hammers to maintain – or even improve – this form over the entire campaign, and thus ensure that they are still competing for a coveted top four position, but why not aim high? Here is a five-point plan for West Ham to do exactly that over the coming campaign.

Every club, no matter who they are, always set one goal at a time, with the 1st goal being Premier League safety. Achieving that should not be as much of a drama this season as it was last season, but still has to be acheived before any really ambitious plans are underway. Football has one comparrison with tennis, in that with tennis, the only thought is the next ball served is all that matters. Same with football, the next game and then the next minute of that game and the next kick or move in that game is all that really matters. The here and now is all that there is. If the here and now is healthy then I see no reason why West Ham cannot compete for a Europa League qualifying position. Don’t set the bar too high. It can cause pressure for the players, but if moment by moment, the players are on top of their game then anything is possible. You are talking about holding a 4th spot amongst Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City as well as Man Utd who are improving quickly. Saints, as we found are no pushover. No I think West Ham want to aim for a top 7 finish, but 7th in most cases is not enough if any of the top 4 don’t win a domestic cup. If only one of the top 4 win a cup, then 6th place can qualify. If none of the top 4 win a cup then only a 5th place will qualify. It’s ludicrous talking about our 5th place after only 10 games have been played. Safety has to come first and should come earlier this season. If our position is really healthy going into January & we have gotten past the 3rd round of the FA Cup, then we should really go for our 4th FA Cup win and that will get us in the Europa comp, otherwise you are really asking a lot of this squad to maintain a sustained effort of 5th or 6th after 38 Premier League games. I can also see complications. We’ve already had Sakho out. We need him and his goals back like now and starting v Villa, otherwise beating Villa without him will not be a forgone conclusion, so if, or more like when we get injuries, then AC coming could set us back with things having to be changed around again. I’d like to hope we can get a top 6 finish, but there’s also Everton, Liverpool and Spurs. You just cannot guarantee anything. If we have Sakho & Valencia fit for the next 28 games then yes, if not? then maybe we can get top 7, but one thing is for sure, in that the style of football is a lot more enjoyable to watch than it was last season, and what happened to the days of the main thing on fans minds was match days and winning the match on match day. As the future does not really exist. The here and now and good exciting match days have to be first and formost on fans minds. The rest MAY come later, COYI
