Potential Hammer? Aston Villa’s Player of the Season

Fabian DelphWho are ya?

Aston Villa’s Player of the Season Fabian Delph is the latest name to be linked with a switch to east London. Born in Bradford, the 24-year-old Leeds United academy graduate joined the Birmingham based club in 2009. The versatile midfielder has a number of strengths, including his tough tackling and clever footballing brain.

Should the Bradford born man become available it would be naive for Sam Allardyce not to look into a deal.

Watching Delph last season in both fixtures, he excelled in what was a very poor Aston Villa side, despite having one of his poorer games at Villa Park against the Hammers in their 2-0 defeat, Delph still looked the best player on the pitch for Villa.

Scoring three goals in 30 appearances for the Aston-based club  – including an absolute screamer against Southampton at St Mary’s – the Villa midfielder has been turning the eye of Roy Hodgson and his England scouts.

Big Sam, Spend some money!

On the back of his best season in the Premier League it is hard to believe that the Villa man will come cheap. Paul Lambert’s star man is a firm fans’ favourite and is a crucial cog in a young Aston Villa side. It is therefore unlikely that Villa will want to sell one of their star assets on the cheap.

The rumoured fee of five million pound seems well short of the mark and unless Delph’s head gets turned I can only see the bid getting turned down. Although Villa will want to get the former Leeds man tied to a new contract or they could lose him on the cheap come January.

Believability factor?

Sam Allardyce has come out in the press saying he is in the hunt for another central midfielder following the release of Alou Diarra. However, with the Hammers spending big on Enner Valencia, as well as other early season buys, I can’t see the Hammers spending big on Delph, and interest has in fact been denied by a ‘Hammers source’.

I can see our central midfield target being a cheaper option from abroad rather than an expensive player from England. Our owners don’t have a bottomless pit of cash and they won’t want to overspend on a position that they have already strengthened this window with Cheikhou Kouyate.

Game Changer?

Delph played a staring role in Aston Villa’s survival season, although he only scored three goals, he played a Scott Parker-esque role for the Villa. With his key interceptions and his never say die attitude. His goal against Chelsea will live long in the memory.

He would be a good addition for the Hammers as he can bring a different dimension to the Hammers midfield, he is combative and quick with an eye for a pass, but in Kouyate the Irons could already have that man.

Come on you Irons!

You forget to mention that a Villa player would never join a club of west hama stature, even considering Villa’s current woes.

Agree with the other commenter. Villa are a massive club regardless of the situation they’re currently in. I think any first reader at Villa would see going to West Ham as quite a big step down.
