FIVE signings West Ham should consider from the bottom three

Darren BentIt has reached the business end of the season, at both ends of the table.

However, recent results for West Ham, and the teams around them, mean the club doesn’t seem to have much business to attend to on the pitch in the coming weeks.

It is still more than possible to exceed last season’s points tally, but with little pressure coming from teams above or below, attention can easily switch to the off-season.

The owners have already made their intentions clear that they want to make up to five summer signings, and eyes must already be looking through the squads deep in the relegation mire.

Assuming the current bottom three of Sunderland, Fulham, and Cardiff City, go down, here are five players who could boost The Hammers’ campaign next year.

Maarten Stekelenburg

The Dutch international keeper has had a mixed season at Fulham, but would certainly push Adrian for the starting place between the sticks.

Steven Caulker

Already capped by England at 22, Caulker has a chance of being on the plane to Brazil despite Cardiff’s difficult season. If he got on a plane back to the East End after the World Cup, it would be a great signing for the club.

Brede Hangeland

The experienced defender has had injury problems, but has proved his class over seven seasons in the Premier League with Fulham. West Ham need numbers at centre back, and Hangeland would be a better reserve than some of the options we already have.

Adam Johnson

The winger would certainly add competition to the squad, and he showed what he is capable of with his display off the bench for Sunderland against West Ham recently. Could see him having the same sort of revival as Stewart Downing.

Darren Bent

Still only 30, Bent is a proven goalscorer. He could play well off Carroll or on his own. He has been linked with West Ham during a few transfer windows over the years, but if Fulham drop and he is still surplus to requirements at parent club Aston Villa, it could be time to pounce.

Who would you like to see West Ham sign from the clubs you think will be relegated?

Caulker and Johnson yes, but not the other three. Would prefer Ross McCormack and Phil Bardsley.

  • Jamie Faragher says:

Always been a fan of Caulker but his defending seems to be getting worse. Suppose when you’re under that much pressure something’s got to give. Johnson would be a better option than Jarvis has been this season. Would prefer a whole host of championship strikers to Bent though.

  • Sean says:

Bent has a good record but the fact he hasn’t been able to get a regular spot at Villa or Fulham while both teams have been in a relegation fight speaks for itself.

    Seriously?
Caulker & Johnson yes but the others????
Ki and Bardsley are both very good players Sunderland (believe Ki is on loan from Swansea though!).
Jordan Mutch looks a very good player for Cardiff and is very young and think bigger clubs than WHU will be sniffing around Caulker in the summer!

What a poor article, apart from maybe Caulker (and it´s his first season )not a bit of grit & determination between them.

  • Heath says:

I know he’s on loan from Tottscum but Holtby would be a great signing

Good God. After the season we’ve had and no-one has mentioned tall strikers. Every forward over 6’2 should be on the shopping list.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (never actually seen him but he’s tall)
Conor Wickham (right type if he’s under 3m)
Steven Fletcher (Kevin Davies reincarnated but not so tall – a definite maybe if available for 6m)
And of course….. Kenwyne Jones (no more than 2m)

These are the guys in the bottom three.

We’re also about to lose as many as four midfielders. (Diarra, Taylor, Collison, Morrison) and J Cole out the door too.

So, Cattermole and Larsson should be gettable for a small price. Noone looks crafty but may not fit budget priorities and Johnson looks way too expensive.

If we can get some big lad CF for 6 or less, keep R Johnson and Armero (I suppose) – then the rest needs to go on Micah Richards. The boys above will set us back 20m all told, which is probably the whole budget. So if sales of Vaz Te and Morrison go through then your spending that budget. If they stay, then there cannot be much left in the kitty for McCormack or anyone else. Get in Big Ken and get McCormack, I reckon.

  • Sam says:

Bent? are you kidding me? He has scored 3 goals in 22 premier league appearances.

He can’t even get in the side over Rodiellega and Woodrow who are both awful.

Would have Carlton instead of him any day of the week.

  • Anthony says:

Johnson , Bardsley McCormack Micah would do me

  • Dane says:

One of the players that’s impressed me from the bottom three teams is noone from cardiff. Has a great delivery from nearly any situation. Would be perfect with Carroll up front. Would love I sign him. Well underrated this season.

  • mike says:

Albert Adomah would be a good signing, loads of pace and starting to score a few?!
    Johnson and Micah too, coyi

  • philtheiron says:

None of them! The clues are all there! These teams are bottom three/relegated for a reason, ie, they’re not good enough! Apart from anything else they wouldn’t add anything to the party and they are for the most part not as good as the players we already have! Having said that I would take holtby but he doesn’t really count as he’s on loan from spuds!

  • Conk says:

We should be looking at the best and most promising youngsters The incentive being should things work out they will be there at the dawn of the new olympic stadium era

  • wolfie says:

with the exception of Johnson none of them are any better than our current squad,Bent turned us down when he was good he can jog on now

  • JB says:

Just to equal last season’s pts tally, we’d need to win 3 games (or win 2 & get 3 draws WITH NO LOSSES??) out of v Arsenal, Palace, West Brom, Spurs & Man City. Maybe we’ll beat Palace & West Brom, but whoever from, we’ll be lucky to win 2 games LET ALONE GET 9 MORE PTS, but who cares? And I wouldn’t start looking at buying Fulham players just yet, as they do have quite a favourable run in & can win 3 games. If Fulham beat Norwich on Saturday, then maybe we should be looking at Hooper or Snodgrass. Look, we played a blinder against the Pool, but still lost, so let’s not get too carried away as every one of our last 5 games will be tough & we could lose the lot, but if we did then I reckon we’d still stay up (hopefully) as I can’t see whoever finishes in the bottom 3 getting beyond 36 pts, but I’d agree with wolfie, Adam Johnson is real class & HE WILL BE UP FOR GRABS FOR A LOT OF THE BIG CLUBS if Sunderland drop. What makes you think West Ham are gonna be allowed to get him? No, this squad is coming along nicely, after 2 years, it needs a bit of fine tuning, not ransacking.

  • jordan says:

Definitely adam johnson what an amazing player he could be for west ham
