Thomas VermaelenThe whole world and his wife could’ve told West Ham manager Sam Allardyce that Arsenal wouldn’t consider loaning out club captain Thomas Vermaelen.

But, I suppose, as the old adage goes, if you don’t ask you don’t get.

Despite the cheeky attempt from the Hammers to take the out-of-favour centre back on loan, Arsene Wenger insisted the Belgium international still has a key role to play for Arsenal, this season.

Big Sam revealed: “Under the circumstances Arsenal are in, with the Champions League coming up and other Cup matches, they’ve had to use him as soon as any of the two [first choice] central defenders have been injured,”

“I don’t think there’s any chance we’ll get someone of his quality. It’d be nice if we could…”
