If only this Hammers ace was around for longer

|

Alessandro DiamantiIt has been a turbulent decade for West Ham United. Players have come and gone, youth players have come through, and then been sold off, and we have gone through more managers than we ever have in our history.

However, there have been some players who have joined, and were never really given an opportunity to shine at the club before being shipped off to pastures new. One player, who I wish it had worked out better for both player and club, is Italian dynamo, Alessandro Diamanti.

In his time at the club, he scored 7 goals in 28 appearances, but it was his creative flair, and explosive left foot from free kicks that the West Ham faithful adored about him. He was a similar player to Paolo Di Canio, in that he was a ‘floater’ around the main front man, meaning he was hard for the opposition to pick up.

Diamanti had a similar temperament to Paolo as well, that Italian passion which us fans love to see from the players in the claret and blue. He was eccentric with his funny hairstyle, and had an air of arrogance that only good players can possess. My favourite goal was a free kick he scored against Birmingham City at Upton Park to win an important relegation battle match.

He was soon sold off to Brescia, and that was that, another classy player who stayed for a season, then we realised we couldn’t afford him. Diamanti has gone on to represent the full Italian international team at recent tournaments, and I can’t help think what might have been.

COME ON YOU IRONS!!
