Friday is a special day. It’s the day the least amount of people commit suicide, it’s the day people are happy at work, it’s my favourite day. After a Friday I love to go to the pub and have a few beers, it’s always a good way to start the weekend. But then there is something missing, always you go to the pub on Friday and people talk about work, the economy, how bad their marriage is and boring things like that, we lack some excitement, some passion, some entertainment.
In Australia, we have something called Friday night football. There is one game every Friday during the season. Different teams play every week, but it is always known as the big stage. Because this game is watched by everyone who goes to the bar on a Friday night after work, or after dinner with their family. It was a little controversial when it came in, but now if this was to go, it would be like saying people can’t sing songs at games, Friday night football is a part of the game.
So what does this have to do with West Ham? Well right now were in a changing period at West Ham. We have a new stadium, new owners and hopefully a new trophy for a cabinet that fans would love to fill up some more. We need more supporters and we need to grow our brand.
If you travel around South East Asia, every man and his dog supports Manchester United. They have been very good at attracting supporters from all over the world. And they have done this by being on the big stage. This is why we need Friday night football, to give us a chance to prove ourself on the big stage, to give every club a chance on the big stage.
If we can get the big stage set so that every week two teams can have a game that everyone in England and around the world watched, imagine what that does for people who want to watch our game. The FA needs to take this proposal seriously, give the fans what they want. Friday night football.
