West Ham’s Modibo Maiga experiment

Modibo Maiga against Newcastle UnitedI have to admit that last season I was one of those fans complaining about the lack of chances issued out to the newly acquired Modibo Maiga.

Performances against teams like Southampton and Chelsea had many of us buying into the hype and genuinely believing that Maiga could add some much needed quality upfront, a year later and we are still looking for that added quality upfront.

This season it’s safe to say that Maiga has had his fair amount of chances to really prove his worth, but he has struggled to fully adapt to Premiership football. Some may blame our ‘direct’ way of playing football, while others believe that he isn’t good enough. Now I’m starting to believe the latter, in games he often appears unmotivated and unwilling, I know some may have resented Carlton Cole’s contribution at times but Carlton on a bad day is still more of a player than Maiga will ever be (judging on current evidence).

This ‘experiment’ of slowly incorporating the Malian international into the team hasn’t worked so far and I’ll be very surprised if it does!

With Mladen Petric still working towards obtaining match fitness and the return of Carlton Cole; I can see Maiga only being used as a last resort.

Unless he proves us wrong I reckon he’ll be sold in January to free up funds for new players.

Have I been too harsh on Maiga?

Or is the criticism well deserved?

the worst thing at the moment is the fact that his confidence is completely shot allardyce has persevered with him for to long why wont he give eliott lee a go time to cut our losses and get rid!

Can’t blame the manager, easy excuse. We have dominated games and made chances, not Big Sams fault that the players haven’t done what they are paid for and put the ball in the net.

MM’s lost his confidence and is being played out of position but that doesn’t excuse his lack of effort.BFS must have known the type of player he is when he signed him so why use him as a front man ? Baffling but with regards to getting shot of him ? who is gonna come in instead ?

Who in the world is going to buy him ???????? You can right off any thoughts of getting decent money to spend in January . This should have been sorted in the summer . Sam and the owners are clueless .

Think about, this guy wasn’t good enough last year when we scored 11 goals away from home.
Now he’s leading the line on his own.
Watch him off the ball, he doesn’t know how to run off the ball, he never shows short if he does the 1st touch is shocking for a top level player.
Honestly has anyone ever seen a west ham side lacking in any cutting edge as this ?
Even in other relegation seasons at least we generally had the odd shot on target.
Sam blames the forwards, but he built this squad of players who can’t score goals.
    Jarvis – £12m
    Downing – £6m
    Carroll – £18m – only 7 last year.
    Nolan – £6m
    Miaga – £5.5m

£48m ish, doesn’t sound very good business when you look at it like that does it.
Thats more than Liverpool paid for Sturridge and Suarez, or Arsenal paid for Giroud and the other foreign fella.
Spurs paid about £25m forf their forward line.
Get theb gist, Sam can’t pick a player and has wasted £48m ish for a load of players who couldn’t score before they joined us, so why would they now in a defensive formation ?
Sam’s rubbish, relegation here we come, as Sam says his way works the West Ham way doesn’t !!!!

    • Scott Smallman says:

Yeah but he got Ravel Morrison for £500k and Vaz Te for £650k. Can;t look at just the negatives and ignore the positives.

We’re in a difficult position need to build a foundation Sam brought players in who he could trust to get the job done and they have now we slowly progress keep ourselves in the prem and when we get the olympic stadium our wage bill allowance will more than double allowing for progression.

People need to give Sam more praise for what he has achieved over the past three years then he gets.
