Time to reassess West Ham’s aims

Joe ColeWell whichever way you want to look at it, it’s been a poor start to the season…haven’t won since the opening day, struggling to create chances, struggling to score goals and all amongst a back-drop of Leyton Orient fans day-dreaming of a couple of cup finals next season.

Things also look like they’re going to get worse before they better as our next 2 fixtures look tricky to say the least; Hull City have started the season well and will provide a stern test at the KC…then of course its Spurs away…a ground on which we consistently underperform; underlined by the fact we haven’t won there since the days of Ian Wright and Marc Keller all the way back in 1999.

I’m still firmly of the belief that we will be fine in terms of relegation; I can’t help but feel once we get Stewart Downing and Joey Cole back in the side that we’ll start creating more chances and thus convert more of them. What we will have to do however is reset our sights, I however misguidedly believed that we could win something this season…I looked at our side and thought with the likes of the aforementioned Downing and Cole the quality we also possessed in the likes of Winston Reid, Matthew Jarvis, Ravel Morrison, Kevin Nolan, Mohamed Diame and of course Andy Carroll could well see us end our 30 plus year wait for a priceless piece of silverware.

However given our less than auspicious start and Carroll being out for God knows how long (yet again) and the distinct lack of quality forwards to deputise for big Andy; a rather mundane season of mid-table mediocrity would more than suffice.

Andy Carroll’s constant injuries have proved costly; the whole team was constructed with him as the focal point and the club failed to find adequate back-up, this limits what we can achieve this season, but surely this error won’t cost us our place amongst the elite with our impending move to Stratford looming will it?! I for one just can’t see it.

I think we should be happy if we steer clear of a relegation fight and finish mid table; I will be and dont really care if we finish lower than last year. I’d be more concerned if we finished on less points. I’m as confident as I’ve been in years that we wont go down.

There seems to be a clamour from a section of our fans again to get Sam out and bring in poyet, di matteo, Di Canio (maybe not now). Fans that remember our football through rose tinted specs and are willing to sacrifice everything, even maybe the future of our club, to try and push in to the top 8, mortgage our club further and take a risk with a manager that has a far better chance of getting us relegated than Big Sam but may play the football we want(the 3 above definately fit that bill). If we get relegated before the OS move with the debt we have I believe our club is in jepordy.

I feel that as soon as Joe and downing are back we will be far more potent. With a big man up front it is expected that the majority of our goals will come from the midfield. For all those that are constantly negative, think we had a poor transfer window (when have we had a better one?), and constantly banging the Sam out drum, you’ll be the same ones crying and whinging if we get a new manager that predicatbly will take us down !
