What is it like being a Hammer?

West Ham United supporters are a set of supporters like no other and we have been put through more joy and despair than most other teams, we have had the best highs like winning the FA Cup and had the worst lows with relegation yet West Ham have always had a great following. Upton Park has had more rollercoaster rides than Thorpe Park, Chessington and Alton Towers put together and we have been there throughout all of them, but what is it like to be a West Ham supporter right now?

Well, on a personal level, I would say that it is amazing and last season turned out to be one of my favourite seasons in my 9 years as a season ticket holder with only the 2005/06 being a better season in my opinion. Yes, it wasn’t our best results season but for me the magic has been at Upton Park since the first game against Aston Villa to our second half demolition of Chelsea I have loved it all, even when we don’t win I can’t help but feel a sense of pride about being there to see the battling which may have been missing in the last few years to be so strong and evident.

After last season’s terrible results against the likes of Watford, Doncaster Rovers and Bristol City to be able to go into school and know that the usually smug Chelsea or Manchester City fans can be taken down a peg or two just from me repeating the score line is a great feeling. From where it was at the beginning of the season with me being told that we were definitely getting relegated to some people saying that they think we could get into Europe makes me incredibly happy to be a West Ham supporter.

We may not be top of the table or in the Champions League but in my opinion being a West Ham supporter right now is absolutely brilliant and I wouldn’t want it to be any other way. We may not win every game but when I see the boys giving everything and playing with such passion I can’t help but feel the pride as a West Ham supporter.

Whenever I put on my retro West Ham top, get the train to Upton Park and watch us play I am buzzing the whole time until I get home despite what the score is because of the pride that I feel to be able to be a part of the claret and blue army as we take on the Premier League; proving to everybody that West Ham United are a team who won’t just roll over and take a defeat but will stand up and fight and play for the shirt, the badge and the colours.

Being a West Ham supporter has always been the greatest thing for me no matter how heart wrenching or exhilarating the result is and right now is one of the best times to be a West Ham supporter.
