The FIVE Best West Ham Midfielders I Have Seen Play

Scott ParkerI am going to base this article on the five best midfielders that I have actually seen play. So, firstly, one of West Ham’s best midfielders was Scott Parker. He had the ability to wriggle himself out of tight situations that seemed impossible to get out from. He was always one of West Ham’s key players throughout his time at the club and was voted ‘Hammer of the Year’ in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Another one of West Ham’s best ever midfielders is Joe Cole. He was recently reunited with West Ham after his successful time at Chelsea (and not so successful time at Liverpool). Injuries meant that he was unable to play in many of West Ham’s remaining fixtures but in the games that he was able to play in, Cole had a large influence on most of what happened. We can’t forget as well his years at West Ham as a youngster. He was always described as one of the hottest prospects in football and he went from strength to strength at West Ham. It’s good to have him back at Upton Park.

This player certainly isn’t liked by most West Ham fans but you can’t deny that he’s a great player. I’m going to put Frank Lampard in there as one of the best midfielders I’ve seen. Not just because he was good at West Ham, but also because of what he has gone on to achieve. From an early age, you could see that Lampard had the ability of knowing how to score a goal and you have to bare in mind that he is a midfielder. However he left West Ham and joined Chelsea in 2001 and since then, he’s become Chelsea’s all-time top goal scorer.

Next, I am going to say Mark Noble. He has been at West Ham his whole career, since 2004 and is a lifelong Hammers fan. Since he established himself as a regular at West Ham, he has been one of the most consistent midfielders to play in the claret and blue. His set pieces aren’t always up to scratch but you cannot fault his hard work and determination. Noble’s work rate is extraordinary and I will always love a player who is passionate about West Ham, and Mark Noble certainly falls into that category.

The final midfielder that I’m going to say is Kevin Nolan. I feel sorry for Nolan a lot of the time because when he has a bad game, everyone is quick enough to criticise but when he plays well and scores important goals, they all jump back on the bandwagon. He was West Ham’s top goal scorer in the 2012/13 campaign and played an instrumental role on our 2011/12 Championship campaign. His general passion for the game is second to none. I just hope he can persuade Carroll to join West Ham.

The best ever midfielder was Martin Peters. He could do it all – he could pass like Gerard or Brooking, he could tackle like Parker, he could run with the ball, and he was a brilliant header of the ball. He had the vision and on top of that he scored goals. Poetry in motion – pure elegance, plus he was the stand in goalie in the days before substitutes.

I assume you must be very young (compared to me) your selection are all very good but Ill give you Bonzo & Brooking without even thinking about it .. BUT if you aint seen um you cant select em.

  • Dennis Cutts says:

Devenshire, Brooking, and Bonzo instantly jump out at you. But if you go back further, ticker Boyce was’nt bad ever.

  • webbo says:

    You forgot Radoslav Kovac

  • Johnsy says:

None of those five would get anywhere near the top 5 if you count football before the premier league started.

  • blimey says:

Devonshire, Brooking, van der Elst, Liam Brady and Scotty…

  • Hammer says:

  • John says:

  • itbites says:

  • Dave Cotton says:

Peters,Bonzo,Brooking,Devonshire and a toss up between Liam Brady and Stuart Robson. You young’uns have been short changed because you never saw the best we had. El Tel was right. Martin Peters was the player ten years in front of his time and as El tel said no passenger in goal. Ahhhh, happy days

  • Scotty says:

Surerly this isn’t April 1st.? Nolan in your top five can only mean you are his relative or a fan of 2 years at the most. Brooking, Devonshire,Bonds,Joe Cole have no competitors and the fifth could include Ronnie Boyce,Mark Ward,MartinPeters,Harry Hooper and Phil Woosnam to mention a few. Scott Parker did shine in a mediocre team but was not in the class of those mentioned above.Interntiional caps come second to skill, work rate and enthusiasm for the cause- Billy Bonds and Ronnie Boyce being prime exmples. As for Nolan, if he is such a good midfielder why does he play well only as a goal-hanger? He has neither the skill the speed or the awareness to be in the class above. Next you will be telling us that Alladyce is doing a good job. Tottenham apart this a worrying time and roll on the January sales!
