Memory Lane: MY Favourite West Ham Game

Nottingham ForestMy favourite West Ham game is in fact a loss, the 1991 FA Cup semi final. I was eleven years old watching the game on TV. I remember turning round to my brother and telling him that this referee was a bit card happy and West Ham’s defenders should really be careful today.

The fastest growing Hammers website is now on Facebook, click the link to be entered into our up and coming competitions http://www.facebook.com/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

Well, call me Mystic Meg(or a jinx) if you will, but true to form the card happy Mr Hacket pulled out a red card to the bewildered Tony Gale who had sneezed on the midfielder/Olympic diving team member Gary Crosby.

Goals from Crosby, Keane and future Hammers Pearce and Charles put West Ham to the sword on the day but the real winners of that day were the fans of West Ham Utd. The Hammers faithful started signing ‘Billy Bond’s Claret & Blue Army’ from the moment we dropped behind to beyond the final whistle.

I remember telling all my mates at school about that chant and how the Boleyn used to rock to that tune on a regular occurrence but West Ham fans took it to a new level that day, we were losing 4-0 in the semi final of the FA Cup and you couldn’t hear the Notts Forest fans.

Looking for experience? Just want to be heard outside of the Boleyn? We are currently looking for writers, drop us an email at foreverwestham@snack-media.com for more details

It brings a lump to my throat remembering how proud I was to be a West Ham fan that day. I guess that’s why I feel so passionately about ensuring there can be an atmosphere in the Olympic Stadium so days like that can be created again minus the rogue referee and the score line of course!

1976 ECWC semi at Upton park, the place was bursting at the seams and the noise was unbelievable!! The Germans were scared stiff. After the game the good old pc plod tured a blind eye to the extended opening hours.

  • I was at that semi final. I had a season ticket that year but it was still a lottery and I was lucky enough to get a ticket.

Was an amazing day and we gave Forest a good run for their money considering we had injuries and they were tearing up the league at the time but once they got their first we crumbled but I still remember us singing the whole of the match and getting an applause from the Forest fans.

My best ever game was in fact the quarter final game against Everton which we won 2-1. That was probably the best ever atmosphere I have ever experienced at the Boleyn and Slaters performance won it for us.
