West Ham Should Be Optimistic About Chelsea Trip

|

Cole against ChelseaAnother difficult fixture is soon to be upon us. Trips to Stamford Bridge have proved to be rather fruitless in recent years to say the least, but if Big Sam goes about this game in the right way, there is no reason we can’t do a little more than merely contain the European Champions.

What is this? Optimism? It sure is folks, and with good reason. Let me start with the on-going farce surrounding the owner and the managing staff at Chelsea. After making the tremendously popular decision to appoint Rafa Benitez as manager, Roman Abramovich has managed to anger the fans and become even more of a laughing stock than he was originally. I firmly believe that the rift between himself, Rafa and the supporters can only affect the squad of players in a negative way.

Now we all know Chelsea are a side brimming with world class players, but these stars are nowhere near as effective on the field when they are virtually managing themselves. West Ham have proved this season (maybe only in patches) that they can be extremely difficult to break down away from home, so  a game-plan and a solid, organised display will be paramount in disrupting some of The Blues more creative players. It CAN be done.

Another key aspect in achieving a positive result on the 17th March, is the players in the Hammers dressing room being constantly reminded of the score at Upton Park earlier in the season. Same Chelsea manager, same Chelsea players, maybe excluding Demba Ba. The first half display at the Boleyn was one to forget, but the second half was the best football we have played all season. Not only did we beat them, but we did it more than convincingly. Big Sam must get that belief ringing around the side!

Believing yet? Need more convincing? Well in the last five Premier League games, Chelsea have conceded eight goals. Far from the defensive force they have been in recent years. “But how many goals do we score?” I hear you cry. Well the mighty Irons have scored in the their last seven Premier League games, and in fact you would have to revert all the way back to the middle of January when we were defeated by Manchester United in the F.A Cup to find the last time we failed to score.

Forever West Ham is now on Google+, so be sure to find us on there by quite simply (and rather unsurprisingly) searching ‘Forever West Ham’

By now you should all be salivating at the thought of the Irons going to the Bridge and inflicting some serious damage. The mood in the camp is good after the terrific result at the Britannia, players are stepping up and performing above themselves and the supporters in my opinion are the best of the best. So let us go with no fear, players giving their all, the Blue Flag song echoing from the away end, and let’s get to that magic forty point mark!

Anything can happen! It’s a London Derby after all!

We’ve got nothing to lose. Let’s enjoy the day and possibly come away with a draw or even three. Let’s hope so.
