Joe Cole – An Apology

|

Joey Cole 2Though not always positive, all football fans in their lifetimes will have an opinion at least once. Whether proved right or wrong, as supporters we believe them and will often voice them with vociferous belief. However, the easy-going amongst us will admit when we’re wrong, whilst the stubborn ones amongst us try to save face. There’s also the 1% who have ‘opinions’ aimed just to shock or be controversial, not even believed by whoever is spouting forth the garbage. These are worth ignoring!

Forever West Ham is now on Google+, so be sure to find us on there by quite simply (and rather unsurprisingly) searching ‘Forever West Ham’

And so with that in mind I eat humble pie and put my hands up, admitting that I was wrong about Joey Cole. Thinking that one messiah-esque Joey at the club was enough, I greeted the news of his return with a disinterested, gallic-like shrug, pouring pessimism on his home-coming and seeing it as a last payday. I almost saw it as an insult. A ‘Billy Big-Boots’ coming back to us in his twilight days as a favour. His Liverpool form had done little to excite me, his one decent moment being a goal, that he didn’t celebrate, against West Ham. Why would I want him back?

Well….. His first game back against Manchester United saw Joey turn in a man-of-the-match performance, claiming two assists and having the ability to get the crowd on their feet. Showing glimpses of creativity and rolling our memories back to his first spell, a few doubters had been silenced. With his first goals since returning coming against QPR and T*ttenham, Joey showed passion in his celebration. His performances have mirrored those celebrations and it does feel like he’s home.

And it’s not just his performances. Proving a point on the pitch was instrumental in getting the more negative supporters on his side, but saying the right things, almost like a politician, is another string Joseph has added to his already crowded East End bow. Granted, his comments about Liverpool may not have been the wisest thing he could have said, but admitting he wanted to be at a club he could ‘connect with and feel passionate about’ was music to our ears. Moreso when he said he’d turned Sp*rs down in the past and ‘couldn’t imagine ever pulling on a T*ttenham shirt’

So I apologise. Early indications suggest I was wrong. The passion, commitment and ability he brings will benefit West Ham, and maybe, like Paolo Di Canio in the past, he can pass these qualities, his experience and more, on to our current batch of youngsters.

Peace out.
