FIVE Replacements West Ham Should Look At For Andy Carroll

|

Andy CarrollThis week it has been reported that come the end of the Season, Andy Carroll could well be heading back to parent club Liverpool, as the Hammers have decided that the England international hasn’t done enough to warrant a £17.5 million price tag and in excess of an £85,000 wage. Although it seems as if Carroll was made to play for Big Sam, his ego could well be getting in the way of what’s best for his career. If this is the case, and he does leave, if Big Sam is still in charge a new target man will be looked for and here are 5 I think should be considered;

1: Connor Wickham: The now 19 year old Wickham joined Sunderland for 8 million after highly impressing in the Championship with Ipswich, standing at 6ft2 it is unsurprising that Wickham is effective in the air, yet can also play with the ball at his feet. His only real playing time this season has been with the England u21’s where he has impressed, and now a short loan spell with relegation threatened Sheffield Wednesday, although highly unlikely as he has bags of potential and Martin O’Neil isn’t stupid, a cheeky bid could be worth a shot.

2: Matt Smith: Oldham’s FA Cup hero hit 4 goals in 4 appearances in the coveted trophy against Premier League powerhouses Liverpool and Everton. Smith is 23 and his aerial ability was on show for everyone to see. With a massive physical presence, he causes defenders problems, the only drawback is that he plays his football in a much lower league and it would be a risk bringing him to the Premier League, but perhaps a risk worth taking.

3: A player I’m keen on is Ivory Coast international Wilfried Bony. He plays his football for Vitesse in the up and coming Eredivisie. With an impressive 38 goals in 57 appearances, Bony could solve the problem of both, the target man and goal scorer voids West Ham currently have. The 24 year old is having an amazing season with 23 goals in 22 apps so far this season, music to my ears. The 9 million price tag could cause a problem for us, but with the money freed up from Carroll, Bony could be possible, and maybe a better buy than the current number 8.

4: Ricky Van Wolfswinkel: The 24 year old Sporting CP striker has attracted attention of late and has been linked with a move to the Premier League recently, with Norwich showing interest last transfer window. With a career total of 84 goals in 192 apps, he has showed he can hit the back of the net, but is played predominantly as a target man with his 6ft1 stature. I’m not sure how much he’d cost, but is a worthwhile thought, given the way he plays.

5: Marouane Chamakh: The Arsenal striker is currently on loan at West Ham, but was dropped after an impressive home debut against QPR for the returning Andy Carroll. Although, he’s never really impressed at Arsenal, Chamakh has got a fantastic touch and can win aerial duels standing at 6ft2. Although, maybe not a first choice, if we could the 29 year old up for around 5 million, he’d be a decent addition to our Premier League squad.

You would have Chamahk permanently after seeing him play for us? Are you mad? Blind? Or both?

  • b r green says:

Please don´t keep mentioning chamakh he isn´t and never was a striker,he is a mercenry, too lightweight for premiership,on top of that when we tried to sign him on a free from bordeaux he ridiculed west ham and eventually signed for a desperate at the time Arsenal, plus 5M fee gunners would deliver him free of charge.

Martin O’Neil not stupid – the man who paid West Ham £10m for Reo-Coker and Harewood? As it is he’s bang on with Wickham, another centre-forward who doesn’t score goals and the last thing the club needs.

we must be able to better than that lot.

unbelievable article! … do we want the find the next paolo di canio or the next iain dowie? … how successful has west ham’s goal record been playing 1 single solitary immobile target man? a man usually that has had limited technical or goalscoring ability??? … the mind boggles where these knuckle dragging ideas come from. it winds me right up!

Look at the opening paragraph mate. I said if Sam is going to look at a new target man. I don’t like 1 up front, read my other articles before you start insulting.

  • Barney T says:

Sorry, but they are 5 very poor strikers, that still wouldnt give us any more goals up front.

5 better strikers in our price range would be!

    1 Adam Le Fondre Reading

    2 loic Remy qpr

    3 jordon Rhodes Blackburn

    4 Glenn Murray Palace

    5 Darren Bent Villa

    • Ausie John says:

The only one l would have loic Remy others r only championship players that also includes Bent

  • Rory says:

    Alternative list

    1. Adam le fondre : had a great season if reading go down he should be cheap .

Value 3m (if they go down) 5m (if not)

    2. Rickie Lambert : again has had a good season after 3 very good consistent seasons however he is getting older .

Value 4m (if they go down 6m (if not)
    3. Kone : hes had a impressive 1st premier league season with poor delivery with cole and jarvis putting crosses in he could be a good signing .

    4/6m

    4. Darren Bent : after a nothingness season he should be fired up for next season ,with aston villa likely to go down and them not able to start him without having to pay sunderland 6.5m they could be willing to sale for as little as 3.5m .

    Value 3.5/6m

    5. Odemwinge : show no loyalty, is a liability, would clash with players and staff, more touble than he is worth. However these were all said about di canio ! He is getting old and definitely a mercenary but with the asking price at 2m if he has one good season it will be money well spent

    Value 2m

Irrelevant who goes up front. Big Sam system has a big man up front who gets marked out the game. Suggestion, save the money, buy a cardboard cut out of a marque signing and then treat us all to a pie at half time 😉

  • Peter Creak says:

I liked the way Matt Smith dominated in the air,he is still a bit raw but I would take him ahead of Chamak,he wasn’t afraid to mix it with Everton’s defenders.

  • Pam says:

i WATCHED MATT SMITH PLAY AGAINST EVERTON & lIVERPOOL & WAS MOST IMPRESSED WITH HIS PLAY – NOT BIG HEADED OR ANYTHING & WOULD COST THAT MUCH & HE DESERVES A CRACK OF THE WHIP – BUT i WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KEEP ANY CARROLL

  • Billy says:

This Bony looks like an interesting player. I believe every team needs a target man, we just have too many naff ones at the moment. I am going to have a read up on him. Only thing that worries me is the continuing decline of the Dutch League. Our Championship is probably a better standard. Maybe excluding Ajax. You have an interesting opinion in this list though, good read.

    • Ausie John says:

It’s ok we will buy him but not play him he’ll be there for looks waist of time we got Paulista Chamach

  • Blimey says:

I’m not too enthused by any of that list.
Given Villa’s possible relegation, how about signing Benteke…??

  • xxl says:

Christian Benteke, Brian Montenegro, Theres only 1 Carlos Tevez, Piotr Trochowski, Arouna Kone
NB Trochowski is a winger, but he is EPIC!!!!

  • xxl says:

And there is Benfica’s Paraguayan super striker
    Oscar Cardozo.
