West Ham’s Unsung Hero

|

Winston ReidWith Mohamed Diame and Mark Noble stealing all the headlines, one player West Ham can also be thankful for this season is the unsung hero, otherwise known as Winston Reid.

Around the 80th minute of every home game, stadium announcer Jeremy Nicholas declares who the sponsors have named their man of the match. Every game you can tell the people who are genuine football fans, the people that choose the hardest working player or the player who’s had the most impact on the game. Then you’ve got those who just turn up for the freebies and just name the goal scorer.

Reid who signed for the Irons from FC Midtjylland in August 2010, has had his case to be named man of the match at Upton Park nearly every game this season. A figure at the back who has changed from a shy, shaky centre back in the twelve games he played in our relegation season to a dominant, reassuring and reliable defender who has had the likes of Fernando Torres and Robin Van Persie (for 89 minutes and 30seconds) in his back pocket.

Becoming a fans favourite after his screamer against Millw*ll last year, Reid to me, has become a senior player of the squad at the age of 24, taking no prisoners as seen at some games where he and Jussi Jääskeläinen are at each other’s throats, forming strong partnerships with James Collins and recently James Tomkins which keep our decent home form intact and I feel if anything happened to Sam Allardyce’s beloved Kevin Nolan, Reid has done enough now to be considered alongside Nobes as a potential captain.

It seems that relegation has been improved our players; Joey O’Brien, Nobes and Tomkins to name a few but none more than Reid.

With only one notable mistake this season, in giving Loic Remy the whole half of a pitch to run on to score against us, I feel Reid is a massive contender for what seems to be Mo Diame’s Hammer of the Year award. The Kiwi’s recent contract extension can be argued to be one of our signings of the season as interest from one of Europe’s leading clubs can’t be too far away.

    Agreed!

He has been fantastic – by far our most improved player.

To be fair Av Grant stuck him out on the right mostly, so we never knew what he was capable of. Last season and this season he has been our best player, and he is only 24 + despite the impressive performances, he has shown commitment and stayed with the club sigining a new deal too.

    He will only get better.

Well said, completely agree (and that’s a first) he’s had an outstanding season.

I have always believed that Winston had the ability to play at the highest level. He was expected to be brilliant from the off without having time to bed in at a level MUCH higher than he had been accustomed to with with a poor manager and with supporters expecting bigger name signings.

I’m more than pleased to see he’s proving his critics wrong!
