How Have West Ham’s New Signings Settled In?

|

Joey Cole 2Although deadline day wasn’t exactly exciting for us Hammers, the January transfer window saw Sam Allardyce sign 5 players to add to West Ham’s squad in an attempt to regain the form showed at the start of the season, and finish up strongly, amongst them were former prodigy Joe Cole and ex ‘Boro defender Emanuel Pogatetz.

It’s hard to say how they’ve settled in as only Joe Cole has appeared more than twice since arriving. He has shown glimpses of the player I aspired to be like as a boy, but is yet to add a serious contribution to the team, I hate to say it but I think the West Ham number 26 might just be past it, no doubt a decent signing for nothing but not exactly a team member for the future.

As for Pogatetz, he made his first start for the Hammers against Aston Villa in a dire performance, with no real highlights, apart from perhaps James Tomkins’ outstanding performance. It may be harsh to comment on the Austria international right now, but he didn’t particularly impress in a day to forget for the whole team (seems as if they are with a lovely holiday in Dubai, alright for some!).

Marouane Chamakh started in the draw against QPR last month and I thought he was very good. Great touch and hold up ability saw the Moroccan bring others into the game and impress many of the watching fans. However with the return of Andy Carroll, game time for Chamakh is going to be limited and perhaps he won’t get much of a chance to show us what he’s got, big shame in my opinion!

The other two to make up the list are Sean Maguire and loanee Wellington Paulista. Maguire is a young lad with bags of potential so I can’t see him making the team quite yet, most definitely a buy for the future. I’ve heard mixed reviews regarding Paulista but with 3 in 3 for the development squad and the fact he turned down a chance to be part of the trip to Dubai to get some more game time under his belt I think he deserves a chance to get us some goals, (can’t do any worse that the strikers we already have).

I think it’s a bit harsh to say Joe Cole hasn’t made a ‘serious contribution to the team’, being as though he set up two on his second debut for us against Man Utd.

Other than that, though, I totally agree. Especially about Chamakh. I was really impressed with him against QPR. He deserved a goal or two. I hope we see more of him, but, as you say, Carroll will probably keep him out the team.
