What Should West Ham Do With Henderson?

West Ham goalkeeperStephen Henderson has returned from a three month loan in which he made 16 appearances for Ipswich Town. On his return West Ham must now think about what to do with him in the short term if not the long term.

When Jussi Jaaskelainen first started between the sticks for West Ham I was very sceptical, due to things such as his handling and distribution lacking a little bit with the game against Norwich City coming to mind when he put the team under a lot of unnecessary pressure where they had about 5 shots within a minute when Jussi could have easily caught the ball the first time around. However in the past few months I think that Jaaskelainen has become a real symbol of stability and solidity for West Ham and has firmly made a claim to be the West Ham goalkeeper for the foreseeable future. As Jaaskelainen has played so well I don’t feel that we should play Henderson at the moment because it would be silly to change a solid goalkeeper at such a vital stage of the season.

Despite the fact that I wouldn’t play him a still think that Henderson is a great young goalkeeper, who has a very bright future and we should help him to develop as much as we possibly can. Therefore I think it would be a waste of his talents to let him rot on the bench for both us and football, but I don’t want us to sell him as in a couple of years when Jaaskelainen hangs up his gloves I think that Henderson should be the man to replace him.

So I feel that we should loan him out again, however I wouldn’t loan him out to Ipswich again, as I think he should be challenging somebody with experience that he can learn from in order to help him to improve as possible. If I was Sam Allardyce I would try to get him to teams challenging for the Play Offs who have, I think that a team such as Nottingham Forest would be a great move for him due to the fact that he would be around better players and more experienced challengers for the first team place, while in my mind still being good enough to start as there is no point sending him out to a team where he won’t start at all.

You really think that Jussi Jaaskelainen has stability and solidity for West Ham, I think he is the worse keeper in the prem and we should drop him, before its too late, he has no confidence in controlling his area, he dont dive enough for the ball he just watches it go past into the net, theres no talking between him and the defenders, where he should be shouting his head off letting them know where he is for back up? I have no confidence in him as a goal keeper for West Ham lets in too many easy goals in?

I agree with Kevin , but Henderson should be sold. Bring in Robinson from Blackburn as he is solid and could be around for years and can compete with jushi straight away and we need to buy players who want to play for us like the joe Coles , no more mercenarys. Lets stop the rot and start putting the ball in the back of the net more frequently. Neil

Solidarity and stability? Surely this is a joke? His distribution is the poorest I’ve seen at upton park between the sticks, so much so, that the back four are tentative when passing back (reading away). At times he makes good saves but never catches the ball which again puts our back four in jeapordy. The weakest element however, is his inability to command the area especially to relieve the pressure from crosses and free kicks. If however, you refer to solidarity as one of Sam’s, ‘old guard’
Then you are right but not in terms of meritocracy as it seems our club captain can be ineffectual for over 10 games and still keep his place.

To summise, your comment about stability and solidarity is laughable.

I’ve got to agree, Jaaskelainen is poor. He doesn’t command his area. At corners, he has his arms outstretched above his head, as if ready to come and meet the ball, but he stays rooted on his line. I used to play in goal and I was coached that any ball into the six yard box was either caught or punched clear.
Worse still is his distribution, countless times this season he has put the team in trouble mis-kicking the ball to an opposition player after receiving a backpass.
These are two areas he should be working on in training.
