Whatever Happened To This Former West Ham Striker?

|

Henri Camara – remember him? I wouldn’t be too surprised if you don’t, to be honest. He didn’t exactly have the best time at West Ham in his time there.

When Paul Jewell left Wigan Athletic – AKA the club with miraculous staying power – the future looked bleak for Camara, who didn’t appear to be involved in the club’s future plans. And who takes in people called Camara who aren’t the best of players? Ah yes, our good friends West Ham United.

Camara didn’t take to the spotlight at the Boleyn, especially with other strikers Ashton, Zamora and Bellamy in fine form. He made 10 appearances but didn’t manage to hit the back of the net at all, and returned to Wigan with his tail between his legs after his loan period with the Hammers.

On his return to the Latics, Camara said:

“I feel I need to make up for lost time at my age and I have to view the last couple of years as being wasted. I was not a bad boy at West Ham but they just did not give me a chance. I trained hard every day and people could not understand why I wasn’t playing. I asked the manager and he could not give me an answer. What happened at West Ham last season destroyed my confidence levels. I did not get the breaks there. Football is a confidence thing and I am a goal scorer, that is what I go on the field to do. It was not really my decision to go on loan but I took my chance and it was a mistake.”

It looks like Wigan wanted to get shot of Henri again, this time with him going to Stoke City on another loan. Again, his stay was goalless and he was released by Wigan at the end of the season.

A short term deal with Sheffield United followed, and although Camara made many appearances for the Blades, they had to cut the wage bill which resulted in – you’ve guess it – him being rejected again.

Henri now plays in Greece, and is currently at Panetolikos. In his time at West Ham and from then on, he has managed to score 10 goals in 78 appearances, which I’m sure you’ll agree is hardly prolific striker material.

So no Henri, it would appear that it wasn’t us, it was you. Let’s still try and be friends.
