Great expectations…

|

So now we move onto tonight’s clash with Stoke City and though the media peculiarly aren’t praising our phenomenal start to the high heavens; there is a certain growing expectation amongst the Irons faithful that Stoke will merely be brushed aside with little resistance.

We’re flying and they’re a fading force within the Premier League; under the lights, live on Sky surely it’ll be an exhibition right? Wrong! Monday night will be a battle as much against the rigid and tenacious Tony Pulis mob as it will be dealing with rising expectation levels at Upton Park.

A win at home to Stoke would be priceless as it would take us to 5th in the league and allow us to achieve back to back wins for the first time this season; which would be a fantastic fillip for the side ahead of our trip to the Lane next Sunday.

I remember the last time we were doing this well in the Prem. We’d just beaten Arsenal at Highbury 2-3 to win our 6th game in a row in all competitions (05/06 season) and next up we had a struggling Sunderland side at home; the perception was that after triumphing against Henry, Pires and co. we’d sweep Sunderland aside with ease…what followed was a hugely frustrating game that we ultimately won 2-0 thanks to goals from Dean Ashton and Paul Konchesky; but it took until the 81st minute for the deadlock to be broken.

I think it’s safe to say we’re now looking beyond merely staying up as our points tally at this stage coupled with the ineptness of clubs down at the bottom means relegation is now extremely unlikely.

How the team deals with growing expectations will be key to whether or not we secure a much needed 3 points against Stoke.
