Club over country

|

On the day that Andy Carroll, Mark Noble and Matt Jarvis were overlooked by Roy Hodgson for the England team in favour of the likes of Leon Osman, Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling. I pose the question, should we support our club over our country?

Question marks have arisen over the underperforming Hodgson’s selection criteria. Even when taking off our claret and blue specs, some of the recent additions look indifferent giving a some what average feel to the England Squad. Hodgson has also been accused of having a Liverpool bias with the inclusions of Shelvey and Stirling but the addition of an unfit Jack Wilshere only naming 3 strikers raises further question marks.

Unsurprisingly England has slipped down the FIFA rankings with a succession of unconvincing and usually dour matches. Recent critics have highlighted England’s ever poor performances in tournaments combined with usually unchallenging qualifying campaigns peppered with draws with countries like Sweden and Ukraine for fans’ increasing apathy for the national team.

Yet playing for your country should be the pinnacle of any players’ career and most West Ham fans enjoy seeing the club represented at international level for Engalnd. It conjures images of ’66 and Hurst, Peters and Moore however with the lavish lifestyles and inflated wages does the lure of playing for your country still remain?

Matt Jarvis stated in the press that he would love to play for England again and Andy Carroll move to us on the proviso of getting more game time to maintain his England position. Yet conversely I’d prefer our players enjoy their rest during the international break and not be included in the England squad.

For me, Dean Ashton’s injury at the feet of Shaun Wright-Philips was the turning point. No longer did I want to see West Ham players playing for England, risking injury and inflating their egos (Trevor Sinclair) but instead come back from the international break refreshed. Just as I do usually having continued my apathy for the national team by watching anything else whilst the matches are on.Plus I struggle cheering for Tottenham players or Frank Lampard playing for England anyway!

The England team is below for anyone that didn’t see it.

Hart, Ruddy, Forster; Baines, Bertrand, Cahill, Caulker, Jagielka, G Johnson, Shawcross, Walker; Cleverley, Gerrard, A Lennon, Osman, Shelvey, Sterling, Walcott, Wilshere,Ashley Young; Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck.
