Against Southampton on Saturday the returning prodigal son aka Yossi Benayoun got the nod to replace the crocked Ricardo Vaz Te; and after his assist for Kevin Nolan’s goal which put us 2-0 up his inclusion over Modibo Maiga seemed very much the right decision.

Then of course Maiga got his cameo and exploited it to the full by scoring a truly magnificent solo goal.

The 4-2-3-1 which Sam is deploying has worked wonders as we proudly sit 7th with only two defeats from our opening 8 games; this system however only requires one striker and that’s always going to be the most expensive British player in history when he’s available. The left side will be occupied by the club’s record transfer in Matt Jarvis; which just leaves one spot…the wide right position.

After Maiga’s sublime finish on Saturday (his 3rd goal for the club) or Yossi’s assist for Nolan’s tap in who should fill the role? It’s not an easy question to answer; Yossi provides more of a creative element to the role; where as Maiga definitely brings more of a goal threat.

I feel for the moment at least Yossi should keep the position; he’s been playing in England for the past 6 years and is very experienced within the Premier League; plying his trade for the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool after his departure from us. Maiga I feel still needs time to adapt to the pace and intensity of the English league and he also offers our best bench option for a goal.

So for the moment perhaps things should stay as they are; with Maiga and Yossi battling out for a starting berth we certainly won’t miss Vaz too much.
