Lack of firepower

Another Premier League game, another point in the bank, another cup run ends in humiliation and another impotent display from our strikers. The fact we have 9 points this season is all the more remarkable considering our strikers, cannot find the net despite innumerable chances.

Carlton Cole has borne the brunt of most supporters fury over the last couple of games. The striker quite rightly lacks that instinctive striker’s touch and deploying him as the lone target man is not playing to his strengths considering he can’t hold up the play or flick the ball on to a player on the same team. But its not just Carlton Cole, Ricardo Vaz Te has also been guilty of not taking his chances.

Whereas Cole often cuts a lonely figure up front on his own, RVT has looked lost out on the wing where his strength and indomitable shots haven’t been seen as much as most supporters would have liked. Statistics from matches show a familiar sight – an overabundance of chances and a lack of goals.

Andy Carroll was superb in his brief 65 minute run out creating 2 of the 3 goals but even he did not get much of an opportunity to score. Maybe it’s not just the strikers; perhaps it’s more the style of play where we use a target man rather than a goal scorer.

That being said the exceptions to the rule are Modibo Maiga and Kevin Nolan. Maiga is definitely pushing for a place in the starting line up with a couple of well taken goals in cup matches where Nolan has continued his goal scoring form into the new season.

Time will tell whether we ca get our strikers scoring perhaps Carroll’s return might not some soon enough.

Who cares who scores, so long as they ARE scoring? Surely the fact they’ve only lost one league game this season, at a ground where Swansea only lost 4 times last season in their first sortie in the Premiership, gives grounds for encouragement doesn’t it? Ball in the back of the net is what counts, it doesn’t matter how it get’s there, whether it’s a million passes or two, Premier League survival and consolidation is what it’s all about these days. Sam Allerdyce was right, playing the ‘West Ham way’ got us relegated, ninth in the Premier League with nine points so far, will do me fine at the moment!

It is a bit worrying about our strikers – we look to be relying on Carroll too much. Perhaps we shouldn’t have let Baldock go??

How can they “rely on Carroll too much?” he’s only played 65 minutes!
